A big day today.

The official wall opening ceremony. The sun was bright faces were glowing. Ribbons were made and scissors decorated. White gloves provided. Hustle and bustle. Me and Gaetan were late but it didn’t matter as everyone was having a meeting which there was no time to translate.

Aya had transcribed the design into Japanese to show people what each section was. After working on the design for 9 months I couldn’t face altering it and adjusting it any more so I was thankful she and Arisa took the baton at the last leg helping to tidy and make it understandable to the locals.

Many people started to arrive. Lots of cameras and newspaper journalists asking questions. Familiar faces that were once strangers greeted us with warm smiles and open arms and we shared in a collected happiness. It was such a rush of people, gestures and attention. Gifts were presented with big bows and beautiful wrapping papers. Mothers with hand made crafts and sweets, flowers, letters and paintings from children with notes of appreciation.

Junko started the ceremony off with Thanks to the crowd and the mayor followed. Lots of bowing and smiles. My name was mentioned a few times. I bowed and smiles. People clapped.

I said a few words about how the project started in March with me and Arisa bouncing ideas off each other. Arisa giving me information about nagareyama and me plotting out how we could transfer this into imagery.

We cut the rope.

Gaetan played an important part entertaining the children and keeping Arisa’s youngest from running into the ceremony and tugging on her.

We walked the stretch of the wall, Arisa annotating each section, we managed to do it within our ten minute time slot.

Me and Gaetan took the kids for icecream whilst the adults talked business in machimin.
After everyone had left, we continued our persuit to clean the road of paint pox.
Champagne was popped later and I think the kids got to watch Frozen 2.

Everyone was satisfied.
